Back story: You've heard of humans raised by wolves? Well, my situation is exactly the opposite -- a wild animal raised by civilized folk. This allows me to retain a bugbear's physical characteristics, but gives me literacy in 3 languages and a penchant for using manufactured items in interesting ways. (For example, forks aren't used for eating, but for picking fleas and nits out of my fur.) Like most bugbears, I have an appreciation for only two things: food and shiny objects, primarily gems and jewelry but shiny coins are game, too. (At least, at lower levels when I haven't seen many coins. Later on, I'll be less intrigued by such mundane things.) And I doesn't like cheese -- it gives me gas.
My tribe and family was slaughtered in a raid by low- to mid-level adventurers. The paladin in the party wouldn't let the group kill me (as an infant, less than 2 years old) on the theory that there was no such thing as "original sin". He brought me to Silverymoon and found a couple who worked as animal trainers to take care of me. In the next 10 years, I grew strong enough to perform significant feats of strength for my newfound parents while they trained animals for nobles. The nobles paid reasonably well for the services my parents provided.
My mother was killed by an enraged baby griffon only 8 months ago (I still grieve at odd times). The infant griffon was only beginning its training when the noble showed up to inquire on its progress. When told that it would take months, not days, for the griffon to be trained, the noble became irate and started arguing with my father. Being sensitive creatures, the griffon picked up on this emotional energy and was also agitated. When my mother turned to complete the feeding process, the griffon pounced on her and with a single attack ripped out her larynx. The noble was aghast at what he'd just witnessed, but of course did not understand that it was his own outburst that had worked the griffon into such a frenzy. My father calmed the animal and then hurried to a nearby cabinet where he kept healing potions for emergencies such as this. However, a curing potion trickled into her mouth had no effect.
My father later pleaded with the minor noble, Lord Keiron, to have her restored to life. "I know such powerful magic exists, and although you may not recognize your involvement in this matter, anyone with animal handling skills will verify it." The noble, however, offered only a bereavement payment of 500gp, take it or leave it, and had my father removed from the manor.
I grew up learning that the nobles are the source of many problems in our society, not the least of which is their scorn for the lower classes. However, I'm also pragmatic: the nobles have the gold, and if I want the gold (for myself or for my father), I need to grovel and kneel before them. Each time I do, my anger grows. At first, the anger wouldn't fill a thimble. But it grew. It grew to fill a cup, then a bucket, then a barrel. One day, it will burst forth from me with such vengeance that even the gods won't be able to hold me back... I have pity for any innocents nearby who get caught in the conflagaration.
